In Darton State’s (GA) (43-20, 0-1 JUCO) first appearance to the JUCO World Series, head coach Scot Hemmings certainly didn’t predict a game where both teams would combine for 24 runs. On the other side, Cisco College (TX) (47-14, 1-0 JUCO) knows how to grind games out.
No matter the effort from the pitchers, whether a no-hitter or eight runs being scored, a coach must watch the total pitch count on his young arms. Wranglers head David White had to pull starting pitcher Jeb Bargfeldt, after he threw 113 pitches through six innings of work. His eight strikeouts over that time might seem like the Wranglers’ starter had a great game, however, Bargfeldt gave up five earned runs and nine had crossed the plate by the time he was pulled.
Good thing for Cisco is they have an offense that can fight it out, getting as many as runs as needed. In this one they would need 13 total, as Darton St. would put 11 on the board.
Not only were there 24-runs combined there were 32 hits combined as well.
Leading the way for not only Cisco, but in the game was Ryan Nelson. Nelson drove home six RBIs and had two homers in the game.
Teammate Zach Rheams knows anyone in the lineup can come through with the sticks that’s how potent this team is. “Yeah any guy in our lineup can step up big. Nelson had a great day he hasn’t had many days like this,” Rheams said.
Cisco College stays in the winners bracket with the win. Dalton St. falls into the losers bracket, one loss from elimination and their world series trip being cut short.
