The Denver Broncos are in the process of filling out their 90-man roster with the NFL Draft approaching. Before the draft takes place in a couple of weeks, the team added some veteran safety and special teams depth to the roster.
Denver Broncos sign veteran safety Sam Franklin Jr. to one-year deal
The Denver Broncos are done making any big splashes when it comes to late-tier NFL Free Agency signings, but they’re still looking to add pieces to the roster.

On Tuesday, the Broncos signed veteran safety and special teams contributor Sam Franklin Jr. to a one-year deal. While Franklin Jr. is a player who can add depth to the safety position, the Broncos picked him up primarily to compete for a role on special teams.
In 2024, he played only four snaps on defense for the Carolina Panthers and former Broncos defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero. He played 84% of the Panthers special teams snaps and had eight total tackles. With new special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi taking over, he’ll be looking to mix in a variety of young players and veteran players to fill out his unit this upcoming season.
With his addition, the Broncos have a handful of safeties to round out their depth as they build their training camp roster.

With veteran defensive back Tremon Smith’s departure in free agency, Rizzi is pulling out all of the stops to find another core four specialist who can emerge in the role he had for the Broncos previously. Offseason addition Trent Sherfield is one of those options, but there will be plenty of competition when it comes to trying to stand out in the eyes of Denver’s new special teams coordinator.
