The Denver Broncos have added a punter to their roster going into the team’s offseason program, tabbing veteran Matt Haack as the guy who will be responsible for booting the ball at altitude for Darren Rizzi.

Denver Broncos add veteran punter Matt Haack

After losing Riley Dixon to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in NFL Free Agency, the Denver Broncos, and new special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi are adding veteran punter Matt Haack into the mix on a one-year deal.

The move was first reported by 9News’ Mike Klis on Wednesday morning.

Haack, soon to be a ninth-year veteran, punted in four games last season for the New York Giants. In four games last year, he punted 21 times for 988 yards, which equates to an average of 47.0 yards per punt. His longest punt of last season was 66 yards, and of his 21 total punts, nine of them landed inside the 20-yard line with only one touchback.

From 2017-2018, Haack was Rizzi’s punter with the Miami Dolphins. As it stands now, the Broncos are adding him as their punter, but it wouldn’t come as a surprise if they add another body into the mix for training camp as the team assembles their 90-man roster.

Broncos head coach Sean Payton has carried two punters during camp for the last two years for competitive purposes, and each time, Dixon won the job and maintained his position as the starter. I wouldn’t expect Payton to change his approach now.

The UFL season is about to begin, and there’s a chance the Broncos will keep their eyes on some of the punters in the competitive spring league, where they discovered Dondrea Tillman, who ended up having a big impact as a rotational pass rusher for the Broncos defense last season.
