The Denver Broncos made a surprising move prior to Monday morning’s practice, by informing safety Caden Sterns of their plans to release him. This move impact the team’s overall depth at the safety position which already has question marks of its own.

As first reported by NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Denver Broncos have informed Sterns that they plan on releasing him. He was selected in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft by Vic Fangio and George Paton.
His level of play when healthy was impactful. In 21 career games, Sterns snagged four interceptions, had nine passes defended, two sacks, and 49 tackles.
This move comes as a major surprise, considering the Broncos’ safety depth is already questionable. Free agent acquisition Brandon Jones is currently out dealing with a hamstring injury. That leaves JL Skinner, Devon Key, Tanner McAllister, Keidron Smith, and Omar Brown as the remaining players at the position behind veteran starter P.J. Locke.
Sterns was making progress after being activated off of the PUP list following the first week of training camp. He began the ramp up period with individual drills, and last week saw some action during 7-on-7.
Sterns was well-regarded in the locker room, especially by his fellow defensive backs. Locke had strong praise for him just a few days ago.
“That’s my brother,” Locke said. “I’m so happy just to have him back. He’s an awesome player. He’s a ball hawk, he’s smart and he’s a team player. That’s another guy I just feel super confident [in] being [to] the side of me. I know he’s going to be there. We just have that type of chemistry. I’m just super excited. He missed two years, and I just really, really hope he comes out and balls out. [I hope he] balls out because he deserves it.”
There is an expectation that Sterns lands on his feet quickly with another NFL team. He has proven he can be a big time defensive contributor if he can stay healthy.
