It pays to be one of the NFL’s best clutch-time kickers, and that’s exactly what the Denver Broncos are doing, extending kicker Wil Lutz to a three-year contract, a source confirms.
The move was first reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
For Lutz, the extension comes just days after he was announced as the NFL’s AFC Special Teams Player of the Week after his performance against the Kansas City Chiefs, where he was 5-for-5 on field goals, including the game-winner that sent the Broncos into their bye week at 9-2, and, more importantly, beating Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.
Lutz has hit three walk-off field goals this season and has been a big reason the Broncos have secured the record they do.
The three-year extension now carries him through the 2028 NFL season.
So far this season, Lutz is 17-of-20 on all of his field goal attempts, including a perfect 24-for-24 on extra points.
One of the underrated dynamics he’s provided this season has come under the new kickoff rules, including two instances where he’s pinned the ball perfectly inside the one, bouncing out of the endzone afterwards, which puts the ball on the 20-yard line instead of the 35-yard line.
Wil Lutz field goal efficiency this season
- 20-29 yards: 4-for-4
- 30-39 yards: 8-for-8
- 40-49 yards: 2-for-3
- 50-59 yards: 3-for-5
His longest this season is from 57 yards. Since he’s been a Bronco, he’s been magnetic as a kicker. In three combined seasons, Lutz is 78-for-88, 99-for-101 on extra point attempts.
Now, Lutz will have a chance to continue to build on his impressive Broncos’ resume after his deal.
