The Denver Broncos roster sits at 85 total players after waiving five players ahead of the 4 PM ET deadline.
What does the Broncos’ depth look like after the roster moves?
Denver Broncos waive five players on Tuesday
Tuesday was a rainy day in Dove Valley with storms pushing practice inside to the Pat Bowlen Fieldhouse.
Outside of weather conditions, it was a rainy day for five players who received news that their time as a Bronco was ending.
The NFL’s roster cutdown date mandated that team clubs go from 90 players to 85 by 4 PM ET on Tuesday.
The Broncos waived running back Max Borghi, wide receivers Kaden Davis and Travis Fulgham, safety Jamar Johnson, and tight end Rodney Williams.
With Borghi being waived, the Broncos running back room consists of Melvin Gordon, Javonte Williams, Mike Boone, Stevie Scott III, and JaQuan Hardy.
Starters are not expected to play during the preseason, which makes the likelihood of Boone, Hardy, and Scott playing a majority of the snaps in the Broncos’ final two exhibition games.
Denver deep wide receiver room
After Fulgham and Davis’s release, the Broncos receiver room still remains deep.
With Brandon Johnson, Kendall Hinton, Trey Quinn, Seth Williams, and Jalen Virgil standing out after one preseason game, Fulgham and Davis will get the chance to find a new home.
Davis stood out during camp due to his work ethic, being the first player on the field each day of practice. Outside of his work ethic, Davis shined in some of the limited plays he had a chance to make.
Unfortunately for Davis and Fulgham, other receivers in the position room simply made more plays and had more overall volume.
Broncos safety room too top-heavy for Jamar Johnson
The Broncos also waived second-year safety Jamar Johnson on Tuesday.
Last year, the Broncos drafted him in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft.
With the emergence of Caden Sterns and P.J. Locke as the key backups behind Justin Simmons and Kareem Jackson, Johnson found himself on the outside looking in.
In the 2022 NFL Draft, general manager George Paton drafted Oklahoma safety Delarrin Turner-Yell in the fifth round, signaling Johnson would face competition.
The Broncos also brought in J.R. Reed during free agency.
Unfortunately for Johnson, Reed seemingly found himself around the football often making plays during training camp.
Miscellaneous Broncos notes
During Tuesday’s practice inside the Pat Bowlen Fieldhouse, Lloyd Cushenberry was not present at the start of practice.
Cushenberry sat out and observed practice with a compression sleeve on his right leg.
The third-year center has demonstrated significant improvement this offseason and in training camp, and has drawn praise from various teammates throughout training camp.
On Tuesday, defensive lineman D.J. Jones noted that Cushenberry is one of the offensive lineman that has stood out to him so far this season.
His backup, Luke Wattenberg missed practice with an injury that he suffered during the team’s 17-7 victory against the Dallas Cowboys.
With two centers down on Tuesday, veteran Graham Glasgow stepped in to take reps at the position.
Defensive lineman Marquiss Spencer was carted off during Tuesday’s practice after going down during the Broncos team period.
Broncos avoided scare with DL Marquiss Spencer, who suffered an apparent knee issue during practice today. Tests revealed no significant injury per source. He’ll be fine. #9sports

9News’ Mike Klis reported that Spencer had tests done, revealing no significant injury.
For Spencer, this is the best news possible after he’s had a strong training camp to date.
