The Denver Broncos’ embarrassing 27-14 loss to the Oakland Raiders on Monday Night Football was likely the nail in head coach Vance Joseph’s coffin. The Broncos looked disinterested in what was a pushover victory for the AFC West division rivals.
The loss had ‘Broncos Country’ in a state of disarray, which led to former Bronco Karl Mecklenburg penning a lengthy Facebook post expressing his frustrations with the current state of the team.
Eric Goodman and Les Shapiro of Afternoon Drive on Mile High Sports Radio AM 1340 | FM 104.7 had Mecklenburg on the program to discuss his post and what the Broncos should do moving forward if they were to move on from Joseph following the season.
“It’s a lack of growth, a lack of movement in a positive direction,” he said. “It looked for a minute, in the middle of the season, like they were making some progress — and then it fell apart. There are a lot of reasons why that can happen, but the head coach is the guy in charge. There is a body of work over two years of very little change.”
Mecklenburg wants to see the Broncos franchise get back to their winning ways and hold themselves to a higher standard, something that has not been present under Joseph.
“To me, as a leader of an organization, you have to have a hold of your cornerstones of the origination, this is who we are,” he explained. “I don’t think that has ever come out in Vance’s tenure. … It’s all about winning football games, and the team has slid away from that in my mind.”
