The Colorado Rockies entered the final day of July a .500 baseball club. A team that has had so many twists and turns to work through has somehow, some way managed to pull within eight games in the division and four of the Wild Card.
Now, one game back of .500, it’s D-day for the Rockies as they will have to decide if they really believe they have a shot at this thing.
As it stands, it is safe to say that Carlos Gonzalez and Charlie Blackmon, two guys who were floated around the trade rumor mill, will be staying in the Mile High City for the remainder of the season. The Rockies are not going to be sellers, let alone big name sellers, at the deadline.
The Rockies are on the brink of deciding to become buyers at this years deadline, according to Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish.
If the Rox are to buy, it will have to be pitching. Their staff has overachieved thus far, ranking fifth in baseball since the All-Star break.
They have the pieces to make a splash for a big name pitcher; however, have the resources in their farm system to help bolster the pitching too. Either way, they can make the moves necessary to add insurance to the staff.
The Rockies still have series remaining with four of the five teams ahead of them in the Wild Card standings, meaning the opportunity is still there to control their own path.
The trade deadline is on Aug. 1 at 2 p.m. MT.
