After much push and pull between the Denver Broncos and Sports Authority, the namesake for the team’s home field, the Broncos now want to axe the relationship with the sports apparel company after they failed to make mandated quarterly payments to the team. According to Alicia Wallace of the Denver Post, Sports Authority’s failed payments were worth a combined $2,105,945.00.
Wallace also reports that Sports Authority is $19.95 million in debt to the Metropolitan Football Stadium District. The company also owes the Broncos $36 million through 2035.
If things aren’t settled soon, the Colorado-based sporting goods brand is headed not just out of business, but also out of a relationship with the now three-time Super Bowl champions.
Should the agreement become void, the question becomes the following: Who will take Sports Authority’s place? Will it revert back to Mile High Stadium, as it did when the Broncos called it home until 2000?
Per NFL policy, a potential new name cannot be associated with any company associated with tobacco products, nor can it have association with another United States area outside Denver or Colorado.
