The Denver Nuggets have already made a sizable splash during the NBA’s free agency period, but Denver Broncos star wide receiver Demaryius Thomas has taken it upon himself to continue doing his part to help improve the Nuggets roster by attempting to recruit his long-time friend Jimmy Butler to Denver.
Thomas took to Instagram to track the progress of not just his workout regimen, but also his plight to convince his good friend to eventually don a Nuggets’ uniform.
According to multiple outlets, Butler has turned down the contract extension offered to him by the Minnesota Timberwolves. It made zero financial sense for Butler to settle for an extension when there is even more money to be made if he becomes an unrestricted free agent, but that scenario puts Minnesota in a bind being that they do not know if Butler will stick around in Minnesota or not.
Butler will now go into the 2018-19 NBA season with the Wolves, but by the end of the season he could opt out of his contract using his player option to become an unrestricted free agent and leave Minnesota to pursue better opportunities without the Timberwolves getting anything in return.
With the possibility of losing Butler in free agency without any compensation, the Timberwolves could look to trade him this season prior to the trade deadline to get some value for him. If that is the case, Denver could put together an enticing trade package to acquire Butler or potentially just wait until he hits the free agent market and use Thomas to help recruit him to the Nuggets.
Regardless, the Nuggets have an ace up their sleeve with Thomas. If Butler ever ends up playing for the Nuggets, it will be largely because Demaryius Thomas convinced his good friend to finally join him in Denver.
