With the Broncos’ Week 16 game in Washington only days away, head coach Vance Joseph said that second-year quarterback Paxton Lynch is “90 percent” healthy, but wouldn’t yet commit to naming a starter for Sunday’s game.
“We’re close,” Joseph told the media on Friday. “Obviously, we’re close now.”
In last week’s win, Brock Osweiler played the most efficient game of his career, so the clear and obvious interpretation of the Broncos’ mindset is that they intend to start Lynch, unless he’s unable to play due to soreness from the high ankle strain suffered in his last performance.
“It’s the same game plan,” Joseph said, after being asked if delaying the decision might hurt the team’s scheme in Washington. “No difference. It’s not really complicated at all.”
While the Broncos do need to see what they have in Lynch before entering a critical offseason in which they will have myriad options available to them for quarterback upgrades, this may be a hard sell to the rest of the roster, who have worked hard to stop and eight-game losing streak and continue a brief, two-game winning streak.
