The hope that the newly raised right field fence at Coors Field would contain those bullets hit towards the Rockies’ bullpen was lost in the second home game of the year.
With two on and one out in the top of the fourth inning on Saturday night the fence was put to the test for the first time.
In fact, it was tested twice in the same inning. And twice it failed to contain blasts from the San Diego Padres.
Shortstop Cory Spangenberg was the first to put one over the new fence with a 395-foot blast into that cleared the bases and gave the Padres a 4-0 lead, thanks also to a solo shot by Matt Kemp in the third inning.
With two more runners on and two outs, Kemp did more damage in the fourth with 428-foot shot to the same part of the park.
So far, all the metrics the Rockies used in the offseason to determine that the raised fence would stop home runs in that direction have miscalculated by about 15-20 vertical feet.
Jorge De La Rosa was the victim of both home runs.
Kemp now has eight multi-home run games in his career, half of those coming against the Rockies.
