Colorado State head football coach Mike Bobo announced Sunday that defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Marty English has informed him that he intends to retire from coaching at the conclusion of the 2017 season.

“I want to thank Marty English for his dedicated service to our football program and to Colorado State University,” said Bobo. “Marty has done an excellent job as a coach, teacher and leader of young men at Colorado State for the past six seasons, including the last three with me, and has represented us with class. He is a loyal, dedicated coach and family person, and somebody for whom I have a great deal of respect.”

“Our focus is on finishing this season strong with a victory in our bowl game, for our program, our coaches, our student-athletes and our fans,” Bobo added.

English, a Colorado native, has enjoyed a 31-year career in coaching, all in college football along the Front Range. He began as a graduate assistant in 1987 at his alma mater, the University of Northern Colorado (1987-2002), and continued at the University of Wyoming (2003-11) before coming to Colorado State in 2012. He has been a defensive coordinator for 11 of his coaching seasons, including three at UNC (2000-02), three at Wyoming (2009-11) and five at CSU (2012-14, 16-17), and specialized in coaching linebackers throughout his career.

Under English’s guidance, Colorado State’s Shaquil Barrett won the 2013 Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year award. He has coached numerous all-conference student-athletes, and been part of coaching staffs that have led their teams to postseason play 17 times. English’s UNC Bears teams won back-to-back NCAA Div. II National Championships in 1996 and ’97, and reached the national semifinals in 2002.

Marty and his wife Suzie have two grown children, a daughter, Kelsey, and a son, Tyler.
