The Denver Broncos possess one of the best wide receiver duos in the NFL. Now they have a pair of young playmakers behind them that could make the entire corps a dangerous group.
Defensive coordinators across the league lose sleep just thinking about the task of covering Emmanuel Sanders and Demaryius Thomas. Both Pro Bowl receivers have a proven record across the NFL of making game-changing plays at any given moment. But for much of the 2016 season, the Broncos offense was slowed despite the dominant playmakers at wide receiver.
A big reason for the offense’s struggles was the lack of receiving options behind Sanders and Thomas. The Broncos missed having a reliable slot receiver when the offense transitioned to a three and four wide receiver sets.
This season should be different, as the Broncos have the roster depth to produce receivers that can complement the dynamic duo at wide receiver.
The first option for a slot receiver that stands out is rookie Carlos Henderson, a third round selection out of Louisiana Tech.
Henderson had been pegged as the Broncos go-to slot receiver since his name was announced at the 2017 NFL Draft, as his skill-set fits the mold of a slot receiver perfectly.
At Louisiana Tech, Henderson played primarily from the slot position, where he still led his team in receiving yards. Henderson’s quick feet and freakish agility will make him a perfect tool for new offensive coordinator Mike McCoy.
Not only can Henderson be a threat in open space, his sharp cuts will make him a reliable weapon to use on third downs – something the Broncos sorely missed last season.
Henderson knows the what he must do to make a difference in the NFL as an effective player.
“At this level, everybody can run and jump,” Henderson said during OTAs. “It’s the small things that you do that separates yourself from the rest of the greats. Once I continue to work on the small things and critique the errors and mistakes that I make, the rest will take care of itself.”
While Henderson may get the headlines as the exciting, high-draft pick rookie, there is another young receiver on the broncos roster that can make an immediate impact as a wide receiver.
One of the tallest players on the roster, Jordan Taylor looks to be a key part of the Broncos receiving corps moving forward.
Taylor was an undrafted free agent during the 2015 season, spending the season on the Broncos practice squad while helping former quarterback Peyton Manning rehab from a variety of injuries. Last season, he slowly began earning more playing time as the season progressed.
Taylor possesses all of the physical traits to be a dominant receiver. From his massive frame, 6-foot-5 inches weighing in at 204 pounds, Taylor also runs with natural speed that makes him hard to cover. And in case anyone needed a reminder: Taylor can catch just about anything.
If Taylor can harness his raw, physical talent he could make a serious push for playing time.
In passing situations, putting Taylor in the outside receiver position would allow Sanders to slide inside to the slot receiver position on three-receiver formations, giving the Broncos an outstanding core of receivers for their young quarterbacks.
As the Broncos gear up for another run at a Super Bowl, they will do so with a revamped offense that contains plenty of depth behind Thomas and Sanders.
If these two young playmakers pan out, the Broncos could have a deep and dynamic receiving corps for years to come.
