The Denver Broncos linebacker depth has been solid for them this season, even after the injury to Alex Singleton. Part of their depth is now headed to the Detroit Lions after Thanksgiving.

Denver Broncos lose LB Kwon Alexander to Detroit Lions

The Denver Broncos have liked what they’ve seen from veteran inside linebacker Kwon Alexander during his time in the Mile High City. After Thursday’s Thanksgiving games, the Detroit Lions suffered a hit at linebacker after linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez tore his ACL.

The Lions, in return, signed Alexander off of the Broncos practice squad. Alexander was out of practice squad elevations in Denver, having been called up three times this season. At one point, there was a belief that he’d be signed to the 53-man roster, but that opportunity passed by after the team signed veteran LB Zach Cunningham to the active roster off of the practice squad.

After that, the writing was on the wall that it’d be unlikely that Alexander would play another down in Denver this season, with the Broncos choosing to go with Cunningham on the active roster instead.

He’ll now join former Broncos wide receiver Tim Patrick in Detroit, where the Lions are playing at a consistently high level with an NFL-leading 11-1 record. Alexander will now have the chance to play more minutes as a Lion.

Despite the loss of the veteran linebacker, the Broncos’ current depth at the position features Justin Strnad and Cody Barton as the starters, with Levelle Bailey and Cunningham serving as the two-deep depth options behind them. Alexander was the only inside backer on the practice squad, which now creates an opening for the team to potentially add somebody else to the mix.

Denver’s 53-man roster is full, and all eyes are on the team’s decision regarding wide receiver Josh Reynolds, whose 21-day window closes next Wednesday. If they are going to bring him back for Monday Night Football, they’ll have to waive somebody from the active roster to do so.
